Underground concrete rainwater tank maintenance
A correctly installed reinforced concrete rainwater tank requires very little maintenance. However, the wider rainwater collection system should be checked regularly to protect water quality and help pumps, filters and other components operate effectively.
Routine checks
- Keep gutters and downpipes clear of leaves, dirt and other debris.
- Inspect and clean leaf screens, inlet strainers, first-flush devices and filters according to the component manufacturer’s instructions.
- Check pumps and associated equipment for changes in performance, unusual noise or visible damage.
- Keep access covers secure and in good condition.
- Check periodically for sediment, unusual odours, discolouration or other changes in water quality.
How the water is used
Maintenance and water quality requirements will depend on whether rainwater is used for garden irrigation, toilets, laundry or other purposes. Speak with your plumber and follow applicable public health guidance if rainwater is connected to household plumbing or used inside the home.
Tank safety
Do not enter a rainwater tank. Inspection, cleaning and repair work inside a tank should only be undertaken by appropriately trained professionals using the required confined-space safety procedures.
